Materials needed:

 

  1. Potting soil
  2. Perlite, vermiculite
  3. Peat moss
  4. Sand
  5. Garden trowels
  6. Large bucket

 

Goals:

 

  1. To use fine gross upper body motor skills
  2. To learn a new horticulture skill
  3. To foster social interaction

 

 

Objectives:

 

  1. Given the appropriate supplies and equipment, participants will blend materials to produce soil mix with 90% accuracy.
  2. Following discussion, participants will describe the benefits of a good soil mix as observed with 90 % accuracy
  3. During the session, participants will socially interact with peers as evidenced by conversations and interactions observed by therapist.

 

 

Process:

 

  1. Assemble participants in greenhouse
  2. Provide each participant with above materials
  3. Demonstrate how to  mix peat moss, perlite, sand and potting soil by using each component as 25% of total mix
  4. Have each participant place soil mix in bucket

  2. To foster social interaction

 

 

OBJECTIVES:

 

  1. Following session, participants will be able to list various plant diseases and how they affect vegetable crops for up to fifteen minutes
  2. During the session, participants will interact with peers via eye contact, conversation and sharing knowledge as appropriate for 75% of the time

 

PROCESS:

 

  1. Distribute  materials
  2. Discuss various plant diseases:
  1. Have students identify diseases using Golden Guide & magnifying glasses
  2. Follow up with discussion

  1. Oasis Horticultural Cubes 1”
  2. Aquaculture system tray, plastic pale
  3. Nutrient Solution
  4. vermiculite
  5. lettuce seeds
  6. tomato seeds

 

GOALS:

 

  1. To use fine motor skills
  2. To improve or maintain cognitive functioning

 

OBJECTIVES:

 

  1. Given the appropriate supplies and equipment, participants will use fine motor skill to build a simple Hydroponic growing system
  2. Upon request participants will be able to list 6 nutrient requirements for plants growing in a soil less environment 90% of the time.

 

PROCESS:

 

  1. Present group with a sample Hydroponic system:

 

  1. Discuss history of Hydroponic gardening
  2. Distribute supplies & equipment
  3. Demonstrate building of Hydroponic system
  4. Plant lettuce and tomato seeds in Oasis cube
  5. Add nutrient mix to aquaculture system tray
  6. Label & date

  4. Watering Cans

 

GOALS:

 

  1. To increase sensory awareness
  2. To foster creative expression

 

OBJECTIVES:

 

  1. Upon request, participants will touch, visualize and smell plant materials
  2. Following demonstration, participants will make an aesthetically pleasing assortment of potted tropical plants 90% of the time

 

 

PROCESS:

 

  1. Arrange tropical plants on greenhouse table
  2. Discuss how  tropical plants become house plants
  3. Have group handle the materials
  4. Demonstrate how to pot-up plants
  5. Have group pot
  6. Water plants
  7. Date & label

Oasis Water System

Seed Spoons

Grow Mat | Heated Seed Starting

Garden Meister Scissors - Professional Garden Scissors

Ivy starter plants

 

GOALS:

 

  1. To foster creative expression
  2. To learn a new horticultural skill
  3. To elevate or maintain self-esteem

 

OBJECTIVES:

 

  1. Participant will build a topiary that reflects individualism and choice, as observed by therapist.
  2. Participant will learn how to build an indoor topiary garden 90% of the time.
  3. Participant will demonstrate a sense of accomplishment upon completion of topiary project by selling topiary project at annual plant sale, as observed by therapist.

 

PROCESS:

 

  1. Participant selects  topiary frame
  2. Participant places fills base of frame with Oasis growing medium
  3. Participant uses seed spoon to insert ivy cuttings in medium
  4. Participant waters Oasis medium
  5. Over time, participant trains ivy to grow over frame
  6. Once well grown, participant  sells topiary project at plant sale

  3. Various small indoor tropical plants
  4. Garden tools
  5. Soil less mix
  6. Spanish Moss
  7. Watering cans

 

GOALS:

 

  1. To use fine motor skills
  2. To foster expression
  3. To improve or maintain social skills

 

OBJECTIVES:

 

  1. Following demonstration, participants will use hands and fine motor skill to build a dish garden.
  2. During each session, participants will choose planter dish, tropical plants, arrange them, plant them and decorate them 90% of the time.
  3. During each session, participants will interact with peers and staff through conversation and  eye contact as observed by therapist.

 

PROCESS:

  1. Demonstrate how to make a dish garden via segmented tasks
  2. Distribute supplies & equipment.
  3. Assist participants as needed
  4. Water dish gardens
  5. Encourage conversation between peers
  6. Have participants discuss projects with group
