Session title: making soil mix
Materials needed:
- Potting soil
- Perlite, vermiculite
- Peat moss
- Sand
- Garden trowels
- Large bucket
Goals:
- To use fine gross upper body motor skills
- To learn a new horticulture skill
- To foster social interaction
Objectives:
- Given the appropriate supplies and equipment, participants will blend materials to produce soil mix with 90% accuracy.
- Following discussion, participants will describe the benefits of a good soil mix as observed with 90 % accuracy
- During the session, participants will socially interact with peers as evidenced by conversations and interactions observed by therapist.
Process:
- Assemble participants in greenhouse
- Provide each participant with above materials
- Demonstrate how to mix peat moss, perlite, sand and potting soil by using each component as 25% of total mix
- Have each participant place soil mix in bucket

- Golden Guide: Plant Diseases
GOALS:
- To increase or improve observational skills
- To foster social interaction
OBJECTIVES:
- Following session, participants will be able to list various plant diseases and how they affect vegetable crops for up to fifteen minutes
- During the session, participants will interact with peers via eye contact, conversation and sharing knowledge as appropriate for 75% of the time
PROCESS:
- Distribute materials
- Discuss various plant diseases:
- Erinia carrotiva- Carrot rot
- Mycellium
- Leaf spot
- Chlorosis
- Have students identify diseases using Golden Guide & magnifying glasses
- Follow up with discussion

GOALS:
- To use fine motor skills
- To improve or maintain cognitive functioning
OBJECTIVES:
- Given the appropriate supplies and equipment, participants will use fine motor skill to build a simple Hydroponic growing system
- Upon request participants will be able to list 6 nutrient requirements for plants growing in a soil less environment 90% of the time.
PROCESS:
- Present group with a sample Hydroponic system:

- Distribute supplies & equipment
- Demonstrate building of Hydroponic system
- Plant lettuce and tomato seeds in Oasis cube
- Add nutrient mix to aquaculture system tray

OBJECTIVES:
- Upon request, participants will touch, visualize and smell plant materials
- Following demonstration, participants will make an aesthetically pleasing assortment of potted tropical plants 90% of the time

- Arrange tropical plants on greenhouse table
- Discuss how tropical plants become house plants
- Have group handle the materials

SESSION TITLE: Indoor Topiary Gardening
MATERIALS NEEDED:
Ivy starter plants
GOALS:
- To foster creative expression
- To learn a new horticultural skill
- To elevate or maintain self-esteem
OBJECTIVES:
- Participant will build a topiary that reflects individualism and choice, as observed by therapist.
- Participant will learn how to build an indoor topiary garden 90% of the time.
- Participant will demonstrate a sense of accomplishment upon completion of topiary project by selling topiary project at annual plant sale, as observed by therapist.
PROCESS:
- Participant selects topiary frame
- Participant places fills base of frame with Oasis growing medium
- Participant uses seed spoon to insert ivy cuttings in medium
- Participant waters Oasis medium
- Over time, participant trains ivy to grow over frame
- Once well grown, participant sells topiary project at plant sale

- Various small indoor tropical plants

- Soil less mix
- Spanish Moss
- Watering cans
GOALS:
- To use fine motor skills
- To foster expression
- To improve or maintain social skills
OBJECTIVES:
- Following demonstration, participants will use hands and fine motor skill to build a dish garden.
- During each session, participants will choose planter dish, tropical plants, arrange them, plant them and decorate them 90% of the time.
- During each session, participants will interact with peers and staff through conversation and eye contact as observed by therapist.
PROCESS:
- Demonstrate how to make a dish garden via segmented tasks
- Distribute supplies & equipment.
- Assist participants as needed
- Water dish gardens
- Encourage conversation between peers
- Have participants discuss projects with group
